The towns present site, in a valley carpeted with pine and oak trees, was founded by the spaniards. The artisans of toto have mastered a variety of crafts. Toto has tanneries , kilns for firing pottery and furniture workshops.

Totonicopán is one of the most hardworking pueblos whose footlooms and
innovations (such as the draw loom) produce the majority of the huipiles and fabrics sold in the republic.

Located 15 miles from Quetzaltenango through a pine covered mountain range overlooking a beautiful valley the largest Totonicapán was one of the most important places of the Reino Quiché, before the Spanish invasion and colonization. and most important town in the village. Wheat, corn, and beans are grown extensively; great herds of sheep and goats graze on the hillsides. Enjoy the beautiful landscape of "Toto". We recommend that you visit the Cathedral. Within it is an ample collection of colonial images as well as a neo-classic theater. There are many family shops that manufacture ceremonial costumes. On Holy Days, you will enjoy marvelous dance performances. Dancers dress in pre-Colombian and Colonial age costumes and perform a dance called "Danza del Venado", or "The Stag's Dance".
