San Francisco El Alto is set into a hill with steep cobbled streets connecting different levels that overlook the valley of Salamá, and beyond, with sweeping views of the volcanoes Santa Maria, Tacana and Tajumulco. A livestock market is located above; a central plaza below accommodates textiles. The (Friday) market is one of the liveliest, if not the largest small market in Guatemala. Wool center like that of San Cristobal Totonicopán and Momestenángo, Traders from every part of Guatemala come to take advantage of textile items offered that include wool blankets from Momestenángo, skirt lengths from Salcajá, head wraps, sashes, skirts, and huipiles from Totonicapan. Trade textile articles are ribbed like Bedford cloth. The best market of the year is held on the first Friday of Lent. Wheat and corn are cultivated here extensively. The colonial church has some interesting murals and silver, including a lamp dating from 1702.
